Inspect the EGR pipes (Hot Pipe, Venturi and Delivery Pipe) for leaks. Are leaks present? Yes; repair and/or replace as necessary and verify repairs. No; Go to step 12. NOTE: Oil residue at the turbo compressor wheel is normal. Excessive oil can be caused by excessive idle time, high air inlet restriction, or high crankcase pressure. Yes; clean the venturi pipe and reinstall the sensor. No; Go to step 25. Remove the EGR cooler hot pipe, EGR crossover pipe and delivery pipe and inspect for excessive build-up or blockage. Is any excessive build-up or blockage found? Refer to section 'Removal of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Hot Pipe'. Ventury flow meter works on the principle of Ventury Effect. A reduction in fluid pressure occurs when a fluid flows through a constricted section of pipe. This happens mainly due to increased flow velocity because of reduced cross section.
Venturi Flow Meter InstallationReduction in pressure is related to actual fluid velocity as well as density of the fluid. Pressure is measured at normal cross section as well as constricted cross section, to get the differential pressure. Based on this differential pressure, fluid velocity and hence volumetric flow rate can be determined.
Ventury Flow MeterDiameter (D) = nominal Pipe Size
Example:
13 Diameters of 6″ pipe = 78″
13 Diameters of 10″ pipe = 130″
Beta = (Bore I.D./Pipe I.D.)
Bore is the smallest diameter of an orifice or nozzle
Up = Upstream Diameters
Down = Downstream Diameters
When Beta is both 0.5 or 0.7 , upstream straight lenght shall be minimum 21D and downstream straight length shall be minimum 2D.
When Beta is both 0.5 or 0.7 , upstream straight lenght shall be minimum 21D and downstream straight length shall be minimum 2D.
If upstream has a reducer, then if Beta is 0.5, upstream straight length shall be minimum 5D and downstream shall be minimum 2D. Also in this case if Beta is 0.7, upstream straight length shall be minimum 8D and downstream shall be minimum 4D.
If upstream has an expander, then if Beta is 0.5, upstream straight length shall be minimum 2D and downstream shall be minimum 2D. Also in this case if Beta is 0.7, upstream straight length shall be minimum 4D and downstream shall be minimum 4D.
COMPLAINT:
Driver may experience poor acceleration and throttle response on DD engines. Code SPN 2659/FMI 1 EGR Flow Target Error Diagnostic/Low Flow may be logged, but at times no codes may be logged at all.
CAUSE:
This may be caused by plugged ports in the EGR Venturi Pipe. This slows down the response of the sensor but sometimes produces no codes because the unit is in Smoke Control, often for several seconds at a time. This will cause no throttle response or poor acceleration.
CORRECTION:
Clean the two Venturi ports and replace the Delta Pressure sensor.
